  3. The Sumerians dug irrigation canals, built the 
  4. world's first cities and developed a written language 
  5. called cuneiform. They worshipped three powerful gods 
  6. who were Nanna (known as Sin by the Babylonians) the 
  7. Moon god who traveled in a crescent shaped boat, 
  8. Shamash the goddess of the Sun, and Ishtar the 
  9. goddess of fertility (analogous to Astarte) who lived 
  10. in the bright morning "star", Venus. By 3000 BC, the 
  11. Sumerian calendar accurately predicted the changing 
  12. of the seasons.
